How to dry a down jacket

When choosing one or another method of washing a down jacket, you should remember that under no circumstances should it be soaked. The synthetic filler holofiber and padding polyester is considered the most unpretentious. The situation is more complicated with products where the insulation is down or feather. If they “climb” out of the seams when you wear the item, you can assume that the down jacket will be significantly damaged when washed. How to wash a down jacket in a machine so that the product does not deteriorate? The most important thing is to choose a delicate mode and follow all the above rules, then the item will not lose its original appearance and basic properties for quite a long time.

Sometimes, after drying, the down jacket acquires an unpleasant odor and becomes noticeably thinner. What is the reason for such troubles? It turns out that if it is not dried properly, the fluff clumps and clumps together. It turns out that in one place there is a lot of it, and in another it is completely absent, so a musty smell appears in places where lumps accumulate. Before you start the spin mode in the machine, you can put several small hard balls, for example, tennis balls, in the drum; they will perfectly beat the fluff and straighten out all the lumps. Spin should be done at minimum speed, as is customary for delicate washing.

You need to wash down jackets as rarely as possible, since over time the water-repellent properties of the fabric are lost, and such a product begins to quickly get wet, since the impregnation dissolves in water with washing powder and other detergents.

How to wash a down jacket, by hand or in a washing machine?

There is no clear answer to this question, because each owner of this product chooses the most suitable cleaning method for himself. Many people prefer to go to dry cleaning, which is the most ideal way to give things impeccable cleanliness and refresh their appearance. But at the same time, it takes a lot of time, sometimes you have to wait several days before you can pick up the jacket, and this service costs a lot of money. Washing in a machine is the fastest and does not take up the time or effort of the housewife, but there is a risk that if a number of rules are not followed, the down jacket will be damaged. Manual cleaning is more delicate than machine cleaning, but it often leaves stains. Therefore, how to wash a down jacket: by hand, in a washing machine or take it to the dry cleaner is an individual matter and its success depends on following all the rules and recommendations.

Probably, many housewives have tried to wash a down jacket by hand, because this is an economical way to care for outerwear that does not require financial costs and a lot of time. However, is the result of such a procedure always pleasing and what should you pay attention to so that the item does not lose its beautiful appearance after washing? If you have not encountered such a situation, then you can take advantage of the experience of people who know.

Is it possible to wash a down jacket?

Before you start an event, you should make sure that it is suitable for hand washing. Traditionally, such information is indicated on product labels and it is not recommended to neglect it:

  • if a basin is depicted and a hand is lowered into it, the item can only be washed by hand;
  • container with water - such care is allowed, and does not require any special conditions;
  • Here is a crossed out pelvis - an icon prohibiting such a procedure.

In addition, here the manufacturer writes, again in signs, what temperature conditions are recommended.

How to prepare clothes for the upcoming procedure?

It is worth carefully inspecting all the pockets - external and internal, removing everything from them and shaking out any small debris that has accumulated.

It is better to remove all fastened parts, this applies to the collar, cuffs, and accessories. They can be cleaned or washed separately.

It is advisable to wrap inserts and decorative elements made of metal that are not removable with plastic film or tape, thus protecting them from moisture, exposure to detergents and contact with a damp cloth.

The best detergent for washing down jackets

If the outer fabric is usually synthetic and withstands the effects of washing powders well, then the “down” filling is too sensitive to them. It can crumple, stick together, lose volume and cease to fully perform its functions.

To prevent this from happening, it is advisable to use special liquid detergent compositions suitable for hand washing items filled with down. They have the following advantages:

  • Typically, down washing compositions have a gentle formula and do not damage the materials that make up the clothing.
  • They are much better washed out of the fabric and filling than powder products, therefore, much less rinsing will be required to obtain a clean down jacket without streaks and dirt.
  • Often such liquids are intended for colored fabrics; they retain the intensity of the color of the down jacket.

In extreme cases, when emergency washing of a jacket is required, and there is no suitable product at hand, it is allowed to use liquid soap or hair shampoo. Of course, it is unlikely that you will be able to achieve 100% results, but the item will not be damaged.

But as for conditioners and rinses, it is better to avoid using them. Experienced housewives confirm that when washed by hand or by machine, these preparations most often leave stains on the fabric, and, in addition, they can lead to the gluing of fluffs and feathers of the filler.

Partial wash and pre-treatment

A down jacket is a bulky item that can be problematic to wash completely at home, especially by hand. Especially if the jacket is sick and has a lot of filling. Therefore, it is worth assessing the degree of contamination: it may be necessary to pre-treat particularly contaminated areas, and in some cases, such care is sufficient.

Most often, the area of the hem, pockets, cuffs and sleeves gets dirty - in the seam area. Of course, sometimes spots appear accidentally and it is also advisable to treat them before the main procedure.

To do this, you can take a small brush, apply the product to it and gently, without pressing, clean the desired area. You should not rub the material against each other, which usually happens during hand washing, as this can damage it and the filling.

To remove particularly stubborn stains, you can use a stain remover. But, the product should not contain chlorine, and in addition, it is better to test it on an inconspicuous area and only then apply it to a visible place.

If cleaning has removed dirt and stains, then just hang the product over the bathtub on a hanger, spray it with shower jets and leave it to drain off the moisture. A similar manipulation can be carried out in a shower stall.

When the down jacket requires more total care, you can proceed to the next stage - hand wash it completely.

What methods of hand washing are there?

Also, in the same position, you can moisten the fabric with a detergent diluted in warm water, soap the entire down jacket and rinse thoroughly in the shower.

To ensure that the stream of water hits the down “filling” as little as possible, it is recommended to hold the shower in such a way that the stream flows at an angle, as if sliding along the surface.

If the clothes are heavily soiled, then you can wash the down jacket according to the following algorithm:

  • draw warm water into the bath;
  • dissolve a little liquid detergent in it;
  • place the clothes in water and leave for a quarter of an hour (do not let the down jacket get wet for hours);
  • wash it carefully, again using a soft brush;
  • rinse - by filling the bathtub with clean water or by hanging the jacket on a hanger and spraying it with streams of water.

It is worth noting that it is strictly not recommended to spin down items, regardless of the type of washing. With such an aggressive product, the fluff will definitely become deformed, gather in clumps and the clothes will lose their attractive appearance and functionality.

The final stage is proper drying

To ensure that the efforts made during the procedure are not in vain, it is important to know how to dry a down jacket. Here are a few tricks to avoid damage to your clothes:

  • It is best to dry it vertically - in this case, the product hangs on a hanger. You can lay out a thing horizontally if it has a thin layer of filler or has virtually no cells and the entire internal material can sink down.
  • It is advisable to place a jacket with water on it in the dryer.
  • It is not recommended to place fabric - a towel or diaper - under the down jacket - both sides of the surface should be open, otherwise the down may begin to rot and will exude a musty aroma.
  • A bath is a room with high humidity, which means it is better to dry your jacket in another place. In winter you can hang it on the street or balcony, in summer you can too - but in a shady place.

A down jacket is a comfortable garment that people increasingly prefer; naturally, questions about its care arise more and more often. But, if you wash the product correctly, you can do without the help of specialists and cope with the task yourself.
