Men wear skirts. Men in skirts: terrible or wonderful? Masculinity is not defined by attire.

A men's skirt is an original outfit with which you can create a defiant and eccentric image. Not every fashionista will be able to go out into the street in such attire and still be confident in themselves and their irresistibility.

The history of men's skirts and dresses begins long before the first fashion shows. Many peoples of the world include a skirt in a man's traditional costume, for example, the men's kilt skirt, known throughout the world, Japanese men's skirts, and the traditional men's dance with skirts. For many cultures of antiquity, a skirt in a man’s wardrobe was the same popular item of clothing as a tie (we already mentioned this accessory in the article “Tie. The most elegant and stylish accessory”).

In the 60s of the last century, weak attempts to equate men's and women's skirts were made by the hippie movement. According to hippies, clothing should not differ depending on gender, which means that skirts and dresses are also available to representatives of the stronger sex, just like trousers and pantsuits for women. The idea appealed only to ardent adherents of the movement, while apologists for the classics in the men's wardrobe did not adopt skirts as a must-have.

For the first time, a male model in a skirt appeared on the catwalk in the early 80s as a creative experiment by Australian Ray Petrie. Inspired by the traditional men's skirt attire in Scotland, where Ray Petrie is from, the celebrity stylist sought to add a modern twist to the classic men's wardrobe. The image was considered shocking, but it never penetrated into everyday fashion. Fashion critics and connoisseurs were more lenient towards the later appearance of skirts on male models by Ray Petrie, but were in no hurry to transfer the outfit from the category of “couture”.

The men's skirts and men's mini skirt presented at a fashion show in 1984 caused a real stir in the press and among critics. For some, the shock was the change in the usual image of a man, for others - the repetition of the ideas of Ray Petrie and historical costumes in general.

Masculinity is not defined by attire.

Gaultier's 1984 show excited both supporters and opponents of men's skirts. While opponents discussed the inexcusability of such an outfit, the dudes chose a skirt as the main element in the image. True, only a few dared to undertake such experiments, and even then only for a few weeks of New York fashion. At the same time, the maestro himself, Jean-Paul Gaultier, rightly noted that masculinity does not depend on clothes, but on the person who wears them.

The vocalist of the famous rock band Guns’n’Roses, Axl Rose, liked Gaultier’s sensational models so much that in the next few years, the master’s skirts became a mandatory element of the stage image. Despite the unprecedented popularity of the group and its singer, men's rock skirts still did not become fashionable among fans, and for the next 20 years they attracted virtually no attention from the fashion industry.

A new surge of interest in skirts that reveal men's legs came in 2009, when a group of activists held an action in the UK calling for the return of the right of heterosexual men to wear what they want, including skirts. The action was supported by the famous designer Marc Jacobs, and soon skirt models for men appeared in H&M collections; even GQ admitted that a men's checkered skirt could become a trend of the season.

Every year, the fashion for men's skirts becomes more and more acceptable to a wide range of connoisseurs. In many ways, the popularization of this element of the wardrobe was served by hip-hop culture; such famous performers as Jeremy Scott, Kanye, Rick Owens often appear at concerts or in public wearing a skirt or a wide, long T-shirt resembling a dress. The rappers' unique style includes layering - a skirt can be worn over the top, and bombers or jackets can be worn over a long T-shirt. Designers of brands such as EnNoir and KTZ have taken the baton of popularizing men's skirts and regularly include this element in new collections, creating a unique ghetto-gothic style, into which a skirt for the stronger half of humanity fits perfectly - a combination of trendy layering and iconic hip-hop.

How and when to wear a skirt?

Hood by Air, Junya Watanabe, Walter Van Beirendonck and even cult designers Matthew Miller and Jonathan Anderson in their new spring collection offer skirt models for men or long shirt-dresses for those who are not yet ready for radical experiments with their wardrobe.

Like the classic elements of men's fashion, a skirt requires careful selection and stylish combination. Fortunately, a huge selection of models today allows you to create a decent outfit.

For a business style, when a classic shirt and a dress shirt are combined in the look, a long men's skirt in discreet colors is suitable. A leather belt remains a must-have addition to your look. Urban style does not impose requirements on the length of a men's skirt, but it is preferable that the product reaches the middle of the knee, even if the skirt is worn over trousers. For the city, designers also do not recommend experimenting with color, leaving the canvas monochrome - black, white, gray or olive. Only a few designers, such as Junya Watanabe, include colorful skirts for men in their collections.

Summer is a period of fashionable experiments; it is in this season that designers offer models of skirts made of cotton and gabardine. Such men's skirts reach the knee in length, and the colors delight with rich summer prints.

In the cut of men's dresses and skirts, designers give preference to geometric shapes - trapezoid, straight cut, floor-length tulip skirt for special occasions. Dresses are made mainly in straight lines or in the form of an elongated shirt.

A jacket or jumper (in a more street style) is worn over a skirt, a men's dress, a turtleneck and a bomber jacket will also make a worthy composition for the skirt. In 2016, a wide poncho cape is also worn over the outfit.

Having given up hopes of making the men's skirt familiar to the wardrobe of the majority, trendsetters are still actively fighting against “mancrimination”, no, no, and even going out in a new skirt or garment.

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a men's skirt is the Scottish kilt. After the fantasy-historical action films about “Highlander” and “Braveheart,” interest in the men’s skirt arose among the Russian-speaking Internet community - how do the Scots manage to maintain brutality by wrapping their hips in woolen checkered fabric? In Russia, a largely northern country, the skirt is considered an exclusively female item of clothing, but in many countries with subtropical and tropical climates this “gender discrimination” does not exist. And, interestingly, many centuries ago, a skirt was classified as unisex clothing...

To protect the legs from the cold and the genitals from scratches, the easiest way is to wrap the lower part of the body with a wide strip of fabric or, as ancient people did, with a fragment of the skin of a killed animal. Without exception, all cultures and peoples that inhabited the Earth several thousand years ago wore either skirts or (mainly residents of southern countries) loincloths on their hips. The first woven straw skirts, equally popular among both men and women of that era, were discovered by archaeologists in a cave on the territory of Armenia - the find was dated 3900 BC.

Around 500 BC, the rulers of Persia (modern Iran), waging constant wars with neighboring states, ordered the optimization of the long men's skirt so that horsemen could ride comfortably in the saddle. Previously, riders were forced to wear very wide skirts, which allowed them to freely place their legs on the sides of the horse, but in battle this created a problem - the skirt interfered with quickly getting into and out of the saddle; it constantly caught on the harness. The solution to the problem was to tighten the skirt between the legs using thin belts, now it looked like bloomers.

Over time, the manner of wearing a skirt by the Persian cavalry was adopted by the Sarmatians and Scythians, and then by the tribes of European peoples (Celts, Gauls, Franks, etc.). By the way, European warriors created their own version of pants-skirts - the legs were made of leather, had openings for the legs and were... divided into right and left legs. To put them on, you had to wrap each pant leg around your leg, lace it lengthwise and fasten each leg to your hip with a leather belt, and then connect the pant legs to each other between the legs with belt lacing. You can imagine roughly what such pants looked like when looking at the modern equipment of American cowboys (leather pants over jeans).

The Romans, waging active wars in Europe, considered the sophisticated clothing for the lower part of the body worn by the barbarians to be a complete monstrosity, characteristic only of primitive tribes. The Roman tunic was essentially a bag with holes for the head and arms, belted at the waist. The Roman emperors solved the problem of the inconvenience of legionnaires on horseback with a simple move - the army tunic was shorter than that of citizens of other classes.

Which peoples of our planet do not consider the skirt an exclusively female item of clothing and at the same time do not lose their brutality? Of course, you will say the Scots (again, because of Duncan MacLeod of the MacLeod clan). But this is only Scotland, just one European country and far from the largest both in terms of territory and population on Earth. If you look at the countries of Asia and Oceania, the men there quite respect and actively wear skirts. Here they are, men's skirts: sarong in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and Sri Lanka; Izar in Saudi Arabia and Oman; futan in Yemen; mundi (and lungi and dhoti) in India and Bangladesh; makawis sarong in Somalia; kikoy in East Africa; Sampot in Cambodia; longi in Myanmar; malong in the Philippines; kaomach in Thailand; Sulu in Fiji; kikepa in Hawaii; lap-lap in Papua New Guinea; lava-lava in Samoa; pareu in Tahiti; tupenu in Tonga.

Until the middle of the last century, the Greeks also wore a skirt called foustanella - now it is worn only on special holidays. The reason for the popularity of the skirt among men in the listed countries is related to their climatic characteristics - in a hot and humid atmosphere, wearing trousers inevitably leads to skin problems in the groin area.

In the “civilized” part of our planet, emancipated women of the last century gladly appropriated trousers – in the past, an exclusively “male” item of clothing. However, they still recognize a skirt as “women’s” clothing, and any attempts to encroach on it by the stronger half of humanity are perceived as nothing other than a manifestation of... unconventional sexual inclinations.

In defense of the female position, it is worth noting one male characteristic - in some cases it is difficult for men to wear a skirt due to a characteristic physiological reaction, which is a symptom of sexual desire. It is this feature that requires the Scots to equip their kilt, itself made of dense fabric and replete with folds, with a hinged element located in the groin area.

Men's skirts around the world: Valyaeva's nightmare

For those who are sure that femininity or masculinity is formed by a skirt or pants, it will perhaps be a terrible discovery that traditionally men of many nations wore clothes that, by modern standards, cannot be classified as anything other than a skirt or dress. And at the same time they were stern warriors.

But for many modern peoples, nothing in this regard has, in general, changed.

Greece

The uniform of the Greek Evzone Guards includes a pleated fustanella skirt. It has exactly 400 folds in memory of four centuries of Turkish yoke, and the guardsman begins his morning by smoothing them out with an iron. The fustanella set includes shoes with pom-poms, a white shirt, white woolen stockings, leg warmers, garters for leg warmers, a vest and a phareon hat with a long tassel. The shoes weigh 3 kg each, and the fluffy pom-poms on them were once used to hide knives from the Turks.

Until the start of World War II, fustanella was also worn by ordinary Greeks in the south of the country. Nowadays it is worn only on holidays and more often on boys than on adults.

India

In the homeland of the Vedas, they don’t know that Vedic wisdom extremely strictly determines who wears a skirt and who wears harem pants, so salwar kameez (pants with a tunic) here is a popular women’s costume, and many men, without the slightest doubt, wear put a wrap-around skirt on your hips - lungi or mundu. Accessories for it are optional, you can wear it with a scarf, you can wear it with a shirt, you can wear it just like that.

Kenya

The traditional men's skirt, the kikoy, is very popular here, but... more so among the white population. But Maasai warriors in the south of the country like to flaunt in a belted shuka - clothing that, depending on the weather and situation, is worn as a sundress or as a skirt (lowering the top of the shuka over the hem). Favorite colors for shuka are different shades of red, especially scarlet, and blue. Young men dancing in shuks look incredibly impressive!

Indonesia

In Indonesia, as well as Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Singapore, the skirt worn everywhere by both men and women is called a sarong. The popularity of the sarong is easy to explain: it is very hot here, and the ability to provide ventilation to the body and easily change sweaty clothes is extremely important. Nowadays, trousers are often worn under an official sarong, but they are not provided for in a casual style.

Burma

The local type of skirt is called longzhi. Women wrap it on their thighs, men wrap it on... it will be up to our waist, in short. In addition to the method of wearing, men's longzhi differ from women's in patterns. Men prefer horizontal stripes and checkered patterns. Men's longzhi are called pashou. They are included in the uniform in some schools.

Fiji

In Fiji, men's skirts, sulu vakataga, rule the roost. They are part of the mandatory dress code for officials, military uniforms, and are worn by businessmen, office workers, schoolchildren and police officers. Wearing a sulu to church is a must. Often the hem is cut into triangles. Modern sulu can be either tied at the waist or with clasps. By the way, instead of harsh men's boots, rugged men's sandals are practiced in Fiji.

Yemen

A Yemeni horseman without a futa skirt and a dagger-jambiya is not a horseman! Except that in the north, instead of a futa, there is a toba dress. But pants are unnecessary at this celebration of life.

Hawaii

Handsome Jason Momoa looks amazing in skirts both as Conan the Barbarian and as Khal Drogo. And all because he was used to wearing this item of clothing since childhood: in his native Hawaii, the male population still willingly wears kickcaps. He wears, wore and will wear, because otherwise where will new Momoas come from?

Samoa

We couldn’t help but put Samoa after Hawaii, because it would be a sin to miss such a rhyme. Samoans very carefully preserve their traditions, including the most irrational ones, but wearing a skirt cannot be counted among them. In such a climate, you can’t replace good lava-lava with any pants - you’ll only be wasting away in vain and rubbing your seams gently. Therefore, lava-lava is included in all kinds of uniforms, for example, the police.

The About.com portal invited visitors to the "women's fashion" section to answer this question. And this is what came out of it:

Exciting! I like men in skirts. - 71%
Horrible! Put on your pants! - 0%
I don't care. People should have the right to wear what they want. - 27%

The portal also provided an opportunity for male “skirt wearers” to leave their impressions and thoughts about wearing skirts. These are the stories:

Story 1: Why I wear a skirt

Any that are called masculine or unisex.

Only my fears.

The skirts are very comfortable. They are great for driving on hot days. Plus, there are many colors and shapes to choose from.

How I started wearing skirts:

My wife took the risk of letting me wear a short denim skirt for one day. This was the beginning, but the further it went, the more pleasure wearing skirts brought me. Now I wear skirts all the time. 14 skirts and 3 pairs of blue jeans. Most of the time I wear knee length denim skirts with 4 or 5 pockets (pleats?). I also wear corduroy skirts. I became the owner of a tshirt skirt (?).

Tips and Tricks:

* Just look at how it sits on you, whether it fits correctly.

Story 2: Guys in skirts

What type of men's skirts would I like to see:

Any, because they are not viewed at all!!!

What problems have I encountered while wearing skirts:
Windy days.

Why I like to wear skirts:

They don't have crotch seams that chafe, and the skirts are much cooler than the pants!!!

How I started wearing skirts:
I had rashes on my inner thighs that could not be cured without access to air. The doctor recommended that I try walking in a skirt to help keep the air in contact with the rash!!! It worked and I found that I loved the feel and look of the skirts!!! I tried to wear skirts and dresses when I was a little 9 year old boy and I liked them, but I was told that boys don't wear that!
Now I am 41 years old, and I will never give up my skirts - these are the best feelings!!!

Tips and Tricks

* For the full experience of wearing a skirt, shaving your legs is a must!!!

Story 3: My skirt story

What type of men's skirts would I like to see:

I would like to see a greater variety of colors and styles that can be worn with casual shirts or polos.

What problems have I encountered while wearing skirts:

Skirts that are too tight or made of stretchy (lycra) material will reveal an unattractive "unsmooth" surface on the front. We need skirts tailored to the male anatomy.

Why I like to wear skirts:
It's very different from what everyone is used to, and also because they are comfortable and stylish, I think these are the main reasons for using skirts.

How I started wearing skirts:

It all started about 5 years ago when I was shopping with my girlfriend (at the time). I recommended that she buy a tight denim miniskirt, an idea that caused her indignation. She said that if I liked them so much, then I could become a skirt buyer myself. And... that's exactly what I did.

Tips and Tricks

* Try to combine styles and colors as best as possible. Just because skirts themselves don't mean you can ignore everything else. Remember that you will be an eye-catcher so every little detail will be noticed.
* Act natural, and if it's a short skirt, keep your legs together at all times.

Story 4: Kilts and Skirts

What type of men's skirts would I like to see:

Knee-length or miniskirts with comfortable deep pockets.

What problems have I encountered while wearing skirts:

Right outside the door at first! Problems with a wife who hates the idea.
Airport security searches! (I have a pacemaker)

Why I like to wear skirts:
They are comfortable and do not press in the groin. They are also different from boring pants, pants, pants, and sometimes shorts.
I prefer to wear sports shorts at home, and spend a lot of time outside in them in the summer (unfortunately not at work).

How I started wearing skirts:

I wore a borrowed kilt over 5 years ago and received encouraging compliments when I walked around in it (50 year old Scotsman who had never worn a kilt before - amazing!). I have since purchased my own and wear it on special occasions. However, it is quite heavy for everyday wear.
My son wore a 14-inch faux leather miniskirt and a pink and black sequined skirt that was even shorter when he was in costume dancing. This got me thinking.
I researched the Internet and found a lot of sites for men in skirts, so I thought - why not try this?
I bought a couple of skirts through e-bay - a 17" khaki cargo skirt and a 14" denim mini - and decided to try wearing them.
The first time this happened was at a gas station - I was wearing a skirt when I arrived there. It wouldn't look good if I got cold feet and drove away, so I got out of the car, got gas, and paid at the cash register. There were several people there, including a couple of policemen. They were drinking coffee and should have noticed me, but no one paid any attention. In fact, it almost disappointed me.
Now I wear various skirts to supermarkets, malls, DIY stores, and travel by bus, train, and plane.
All this without any unpleasant comments at all. Just a few belated sidelong glances in the back.
I also wore a denim miniskirt to a 10-mile breast cancer charity marathon and was met with many smiles and support. One female assistant said: “Wow! A man in a skirt! Cool!”, which greatly increased my confidence.

Tips and Tricks

*Buy via e-bay - but make sure the exact measurements are included in the quote. Women's sizes are notoriously unpredictable.
*Exude confidence! - even if your heart is about to jump out! You are not doing anything wrong!
* Start with small shops - along highways, for example, or in shops you don't usually frequent.
* Register on websites for men in skirts - there are many like you.

Story 5: My story about wearing skirts

What type of men's skirts would I like to see:

The skirts I favor range from kilts, through kilt-like robes, to regular knee- or ankle-length skirts. The colors I prefer are solid colors like blue, red-brown and black.

What problems have I encountered while wearing skirts:
Acceptance in society, especially in a country that proclaims itself to be liberal, free-thinking, etc. while in reality people are conservative and Calvinistic. I was ridiculed by various people.

Why I like to wear skirts:
The reason for wearing a skirt at first was curiosity, after trying it I noticed that the comfort is simply excellent, when sitting for a long time the trousers have to be lowered regularly to give freedom to the “family jewels”, this is not necessary with a skirt. I've done a lot of road trips over the last year, about 800 miles a day, and there's a huge difference in comfort when you do it in a skirt versus pants. Therefore, comfort is the reason.
Also, since my wife has cancer and apparently wearing a skirt can reduce the chance of getting it as well, all's good.

How I started wearing skirts:
The first time my wife suggested it was for a bedroom game. There was no real continuation of this, but discussion of the topic arose from time to time. Not knowing whether I would like it, I tried it when my wife was not at home, and at first I was still in awe. After wearing a skirt a number of times, I started experimenting with combinations, one of the combinations being a russet skirt with a brown plaid jacket and tie, russet stockings, and brown moccasins. I once dressed like this for work (in the office and at home), and noted the comfort. In the meantime, we discussed the possibilities several times and my wife indicated that she would like to look for a kilt. I had previously “tested the waters” (scouted the situation) using a large bath towel many times, and she didn’t even raise an eyebrow. One day my wife discovered that I had gone further than a towel. It's a long story, but after all the conversations, she gave her consent. At that very moment she was full of enthusiasm... A few months later she changed her attitude, said that I must be a pervert, homosexual, etc., and filed for divorce (meanwhile she herself wears my socks and shirts; double standards?). Now, several years later, we are still in divorce proceedings as she tries to get all my property.
NB: When my wife announced that she wanted a divorce, she was being treated by an oncologist and a psychiatrist, so the question arises whether she fully understood what was happening, and in addition to this, she was manipulated by a friend who was always putting a spanner in our relationship. wheels. At that time, my wife spent more time on the welfare of this friend than on family matters.

Now that we live separately, I can wear a skirt whenever I want. Walking outside, I was surprised that the knee-length skirt and tights combo was actually warmer than the pants I was wearing just 30 minutes earlier.

I advise anyone who works in an office, or often has to travel long distances like truck drivers for German breweries, to try wearing a skirt.

Tips and Tricks

*Make sure your spouse supports you.
* Make sure your partner is willing to support you now and in the future.
* Pair this with conventional men's attire consistent with today's norms.
* Don't try to look ostentatious, or look like a transvestite who wants to play the role of a different gender (like women wearing trousers, jackets, flat shoes, and maybe ties...).
* Don't be confrontational.
* Since I attract attention even when dressed in a suit and tie, or even casual clothes, since I am quite tall, I tend to limit wearing a skirt to outside the house, and to late evening walks when walking the dog.
* Be yourself.

Story 6: Men in skirts

What type of men's skirts would I like to see:

All types marked as unisex. Most agree that women's sizing charts are extremely inappropriate. In my wardrobe there are about 200 skirts made of different types of fabric, with buttons, pockets, zippers, pleated, long, etc.

What problems have I encountered while wearing skirts:

Not much, actually. There were problems with teenage girls wearing ripped jeans. The kind that I would never wear in public.

Why I like to wear skirts:

Comfort. So many different colors, patterns, variety.

How I started wearing skirts:
In response to a call from my daughter. It was a hot summer day. What a shame, I was the man who couldn't wear a miniskirt on a hot, muggy summer afternoon. But I did it. I shaved my legs, as my daughter advised. Then I switched to an epilator. I started with a denim miniskirt. Added a denim jacket and a denim shirt. Increased diversity from that point on.

Tips and Tricks

* The label is located at the back, regardless of the position of the zipper or buttons.
* Use the size chart. Every seller seems to have their own idea of what a size 15 might be. I have a size 12 skirt that is larger than a size 18 skirt. Keep this in mind.
* Avoid wearing a short pleated skirt on a windy day.
* Don't let the hem of your long skirt get caught by your car door.
* Look in the mirror. The back edge of the skirt may not cover what you intended to cover.
* Run your fingers along the edge as you stand up. Is your skirt out of place?

My comments:

I have two remarks about all of the above.
First- Of course, each of these “skirt lovers” - enthusiasts, can be suspected of something “such”, and hung with the appropriate label - one with transvestite inclinations, the other a fetishist, the third has simply gone crazy in his old age. And in general - would a “normal” person want to go against the “mainstream”?! Just think - billions of men wear pants all their lives and are happy, but this, you see, makes them want to put on skirts! These are the weirdos! But there is another, completely banal consideration - without eccentrics, society begins to stagnate. Social changes always come from “freaks”, not quite normal, from the point of view of the “average” person.
Second- It seems to me very much that all these famous couturiers, “fashion houses”, and other institutions that create new “trends” are outright bullshit. It would seem simpler - conduct a similar survey, take into account the wishes, add the necessary elements of “masculinity” to existing female models based on them, and promote a revolutionary product under the slogans of functionality, “coolness,” and convenience... But no! Instead, we are witnessing a process of “creative (sorry) defecation,” looking at the results of which we want to spit in our hearts and forget, like a nightmare, the very phrase “men’s skirt.”
So? Saving drowning people is the work of the drowning people themselves! That's what we live with...

Some time ago, the Internet was literally agitated by the news about schoolboys who came to classes at Exeter Academy (Devonshire) in skirts. Despite the fact that the incident turned out to be a banal protest, it caused a flurry of criticism and indignation, mainly from the female half of humanity. But are men's skirts and dresses so outlandish? What's special about them? What to wear them with? How to sew? And why do they cause such a surge of emotions in women?

Skirts, dresses: why not?

So, skirts on men. Why, exactly, do they irritate us so much? After all, if you remember, trousers on women not so long ago were also equated with something supernatural. However, modern young ladies quite easily manage to maneuver between pants, shorts, breeches, skirts and dresses of different lengths. So why do men have to settle exclusively for trousers, shorts and breeches? Why don't they dress up in nice men's dresses?

Design ideas and works of masters

Recently, European designers have also been interested in this same question. Not long ago, Paris Fashion Week took place, during which models demonstrated a variety of skirts and dresses in men's style. For example, among these works it was quite possible to come across creations by Rei Kawakubo from the unique Comme des Garçons Homme Plus collection.

Representatives of the famous French brand A.P.C. also tried to destroy stereotypes. They offered models with long hoodies that can be worn with or without short shorts. Loewe, Balmain and Dries Van came up with original tunics and... long men's dresses.

I pleased you with my basques and Dior coat dresses. And debutant Stefano Pilati impressed with an incredibly stylish collection of men's clothing, but in a sophisticated feminine style.

How do men's skirts and dresses differ from women's?

According to many couturiers, there are no differences as such between women's and men's trends in clothing of this type. But dresses and skirts, created specifically for representatives of the stronger half of humanity, are made taking into account the male figure.

This means that even when wearing a skirt or dress, a man does not lose his physical attractiveness and sexuality. He doesn't become any less courageous. On the contrary, this piquant piece of clothing gives him a certain charm and sense of style. According to the stories of the men themselves, they like the certain feeling of freedom that the hem of a dress or skirt gives. It is much more comfortable to walk in them than in pants. And they look very stylish.

Some interesting stories about men in skirts

Men's dresses look incredibly harmonious on oriental men. This amazingly beautiful robe is considered an integral part of their wardrobe. And almost all men living in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and other eastern countries wear them.

Moreover, this robe is considered not only a tribute to fashion. Its use is directly related to religious characteristics, traditions, as well as a certain convenience. After all, these countries are very hot. Arabic men's dress is usually made from natural and light fabrics. And they provide breathing and ventilation to the skin in forty-degree heat.

Dresses can be completely simple, custom-made or purchased from famous designers. But unlike women's clothing, men's clothing is not covered with a huge number of designs and patterns. Applying ornaments to them is also an extremely rare occurrence. True, there are designers offering lace dresses for men. But not everyone likes these.

Several clothing options for oriental men

Men's clothing in the East very often has a straight cut, partially tapered at the bottom. For greater convenience, this skirt is equipped with additional slits on the sides. In Egypt, men's dresses are complemented with spectacular vests or jackets. According to the fashion designers, these wardrobe details do not belong to traditional oriental decorations. Rather, it is a kind of tribute to European fashion. A more classic option is to use outerwear such as abaya, mishlakh or bisht.

In addition, they are often decorated with weapons and belts. For example, it could be a sword in a beautiful sheath (safe), a crescent-curved dagger or a jambia.

Clothing as a sign of status and style

In Arab countries, men's dresses are not only a necessary part of the wardrobe, but can also tell a lot about its owner. Thus, it is believed that the state of a man’s clothing can indicate his social status, level of income and sense of style. Therefore, many Arabs, of course, if they can afford it, try to change clothes 5-7 times a day. It is believed that in this case they will always be clean and tidy.

A few words about the name for men

If you have at least once seen long robes on oriental men, you probably wondered: “What is the name of a man’s dress of this type?” Such unusual and very comfortable clothing, as it turns out, has several names. Such dresses are called jalabiya or gumbaz.

Somewhat less often you can hear words such as “saub shilakha” or “dishdasha”. So if you want to feel like some kind of Arab sheikh, be sure to include this incredible dress in your wardrobe.

A short historical excursion

If you delve even a little into history, you can always find very real evidence that men already wore dresses back then. For example, a homespun linen shirt, reminiscent of a dress, has long been considered very fashionable in Rus'. Usually it was white or beige and decorated with a beautiful red ornament (in the area of the sleeves, belt, shoulders, and on the hem of the skirt).

The situation was the same in Ancient Greece, Rome and other countries. And of course, no one disputes the special attractiveness of the Scottish kilt.

What styles of skirts and dresses are available for men?

In fact, the range of styles of skirts and dresses for men is very rich and varied. These can be very long and straight floor-length dresses, knee-length models, skirts equipped with a large number of pockets, belts and even folds. Or you can find A-line skirts, slightly flared at the bottom, coat dresses, outfits in the form of a poncho, a kind of robe or cape.

Moreover, the color scheme of this robe is also impressive. For example, the classics presented in black, white, gray and pastel colors are considered a win-win and always relevant option. In the background there are usually models with a sports cut, as well as those made from denim. And for those who love creativity, there is a large selection of models in bright and flashy colors a la “Hello, Hawaii!” (with images of palm trees, catchy designs and other ornaments).

In a word, every man is able to choose any of the options he likes. Another thing is what to wear with a men's dress so as not to look stupid?

How to wear dresses and skirts for men?

So, what is the right way to wear skirts and dresses? One of the most interesting and versatile models, in our opinion, is the knee-length skirt. It goes well with almost any top, but only of a similar style. Who said you can't wear a skirt to work? It goes great with a white, black, pink or dark blue shirt, tie, long vest and even a leather jacket. Underneath, you can wear classic black trousers, shoes without socks (or low-rise ones) and complement it all with a neat men's handbag.

An elongated pleated skirt or cut with an elongated jacket with buttons also looks unusual. At the same time, you don’t even have to fasten it, so that everyone around you can see the unusual detail of your wardrobe. Under the bottom of such a dress or skirt, you can also wear tight black, white or gray pants (depending on the color of the product itself) and matching shoes. You can complement the look with a light scarf hanging neatly from the neck, or a small number of long chains.

Long dresses and skirts go perfectly with If, for example, even in this case your image suddenly seems boring to you, you can always complement it with some bright detail. For example, a bright red or coffee-beige belt looks quite advantageous against a black background. You can choose a headdress to match it. For example, it could be a small hat with a similar ribbon or brooch. But, we repeat, everything should be elegant and not stray from the general stylistic context.

In a word, no matter what you wear with a dress or skirt, pay attention to the details and harmony in the image. Otherwise, even a very stylish skirt or dress will look terrible and ridiculous on you.

Where can you find the fashion trend today?

Fashionable men's dresses and skirts can be found in virtual and real stores. But since this trend is not yet widespread, most often it is simply sewn to order. So, let's sew a men's dress! To begin with, it is worth noting that this style is somewhat different from the women's one. It is sewn exclusively for a male figure, and therefore there is nothing cutesy or unmasculine about it.

To sew the appropriate outfit, you need to find out the following parameters:

It is noteworthy that all measurements must be in centimeters. We will also give you some tips on choosing fabric. It is best to give preference to light and natural materials. They will not hinder movement and provide natural ventilation to the skin. After choosing the fabric, sketch out the pattern you like on tracing paper or any other paper, fasten it with bobby pins, trace it and cut it out. And then all that remains is to double-check all the measurements and sew the resulting parts together.
